Mr. Pinkman was a proud and gracious man, and he was a great teacher-one of the true last great teachers left. I always remember his smile when I visited him at his house in Anderson. I just had to re-check my grammar and punctuation before posting this as he would not be happy with mistakes.

I may not be remembered but I certainly remember Matt. While divorcing and having to sell my house he, his son and young granddaughter came by and met one of my dogs to hopefully adopt her. I immediately liked them all. I dropped her off ( cried a lot in the way home) and did visit again. I felt so good about my decision although I wish I could have kept her. Great guy/family. I have been living in CT since 2005. I just now found a box I kept with papers, ribbons and other item that I saved. In there was a letter Matt had sent me 11/2/05 saying ‘let me relieve you about Gwen….’ He told me about their time together. I truly liked him ( right away) but hearing from him was great. He cared and I appreciated that letter. So I was wondering if he was still around and wanted to drop him a note and I saw he recently passed away. I wish I found the note sooner. To his family, I am so sorry for your lose. My prayers are with you and him. I’m glad I was able to help provide him with a companion for I hope many years. What a loss. Doreen

So sorry to hear the passing of Matthew Pinkman (also known as Mr. Pinkman). I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Pinkman in 2011/2012 as my mom Maureen Kinney who is a nurse (care giver) would take care of his sister. I would go with her most of the time as Mr. Pinkman insisted that my mom should bring her children along as he would love to meet them. So, it was always so nice going there and getting to talk to Mr. Pinkman all the time. I remember when he would tell his stories about how he was a principal at the Hackettstown Middle School and he would talk about the teachers that would be there too!! I mentioned I also went to the Hackettstown Middle School and at that time I met Mr. Pinkman, I was going to the Hackettstown High School and he told me that´s where he went to high school too! It was so awesome getting to share our experiences we had there and talk about the teachers there too! He was always so friendly and happy and very kind too. He welcomed my mom and I (sometimes my brother) into his home with open arms and he would always have us fed too! He would always let us watch the television too, which was incredibly kind of him! I remember we would always have brisk lemon ice tea cans he would give us! I also remember going to one of the cook outs at his house which we were invited too, it was so much fun!! Mr. Pinkman was a great guy and I got to meet several of his family members too, who are also very kind people. Mr. Pinkman treated my family like his own and was always so pleasant to be around. I enjoyed going to his house and seeing the smile on his face each time!! He was a wonderful person with a heart full of gold and he will be missed by everyone who knew him. RIP Mr. Pinkman. I send my condolences to the family and friends!

Renee Hayes "Sonny" was a perfect nickname for him as he was such a joyful, generous, big spirit. He could light and warm a room with his smile and voice. He was a real educational pioneer-- becoming one of the few (and by "few" I mean three) Black teachers in a majority White and conservative area and went on to become the first Black school principal. Sonny had many joys and challenges, including eloping with his highschool sweetheart who remained the love of his life during their marriage and after her untimely death; the loss of two children; years of caring for his chronically ill daughter and delighting in his extended family--especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most of all he loved life and embraced its ups and downs with depth and passion. Thank you Uncle Sonny for your unbounding commitment to family, community, learning and fun. You showed us all how its done. I love you and will miss you more than I can say.

Mr. Pinkman was my 8th grade English teacher. I can still remember some of his stories and jokes. Just by being himself, he taught us life lessons within and outside of English. His lessons must have stuck because I became a professional writer. My condolences to his family. He was a great man.

Condolences to the family of Mr. Pinkman. He was an amazing teacher and I will never forget him. He introduced me to the world of JRR Tolkien. He provided copies of The Hobbit to our 8th grade English class, Members of the class wrote a “screenplay” and we performed it in front of our 1974 HMS graduating class during graduation rehearsal. Hello,
I am "Korrie" or Lois Adams...I was Mr. Pinkman's Aide for a little while. I helped him when his daughter lived with him and again many years later. I knew he was unique and jumped at the chance to work for him again. I think it was destiny. He is the sweetest, kindness Gentleman I have ever known! He was a real Joy to talk to and be of service to. He taught me there are kind people in this world and he was a prime example! I am very honored to have gotten to know him! Thank you for the opportunity! I would bet my bottom dollar Mr. Pinkman is surrounded by the Good Lord's Angels!!

My deepest sympathy to Matthew’s family. In high school, I was lucky enough to have him as a student teacher; we loved him! I would later meet and marry Bob Stiff and learn that Matthew was president of his graduating class. Matthew also taught with my mother, Anne Kurzenknabe, and he commented that he appreciated her assistance with the dreaded bulletin board display in the school corridor for all to critique. I am so sorry for your loss.

Dear Family of Mr. Pinkman,
Patty and I send our love and condolences to you. I was blessed to have Mr. Pinkman as my English teacher in 1967-68. I loved him and respected his knowledge and kindness. Patty was a colleague of his at HMS from 1979-1990 and called him Matt. I remember telling her "you can't call him Matt, he's Mr. Pinkman to me". Well, each time he hosted the end of the year picnic for the HMS staff at his home in Anderson, Patty would call him Matt and I would call him Mr. Pinkman.
He was a lifelong teacher to those he taught and a lifelong colleague of those he worked with. I've never met anyone like Mr. Pinkman. RIP sir and God Bless your family and loved ones. (I hope I didn't make too many grammatical errors.)
Love,
Mike and Patty Palko

Dear Pinkman Family
I know you already know this, but Mr. Pinkman was a blessing to the Town of Hackettstown, going from Student to Assistant Principal of the School he attended.
The countless lives he helped mold.
My Wife and I are so very sorry to hear of his passing, and sadly, we will be having my Brother John’s (a former Student of Mr. Pinkman) Funeral the same day, as I would have been honored to visit and extend our condolences.
My Father John Wallace, Mr. David Conrad and Mr. Pinkman painted houses and buildings in the Summer for a few years, and my Dad too earned his Master’s from Montclair State.
May GOD comfort you all during this difficult time.
GOD Bless
Paul and Robin Wallace

Mr. Pinkman was indeed, an incredible human being. His dedication to teaching was unparalleled. In addition to the wisdom that he shared so freely, I think the best lesson that I learned from the very first black man I ever knew was how quickly his color faded away against his dedication And wisdom and kindness. With Mr. Pinkman, I saw only a great man that I admired a lot, and he taught me that skin color made as much difference as eye color And that lesson has stayed with me all of my life. Peace to you, Mr. Pinkman and thank you so much for everything you did for me and for so many other kids. To say you will be missed is certainly an understatement.

As a 7th grader, he spoke to me just like I was an adult rather than a child. One summer while in High School, I worked at the Middle School with the custodial staff. Mr. Pinkman treated me like an equal and a friend. We used to have great talks over coffee in the morning where he insisted I call him Matt but I always called him Mr. Pinkman. He was a great man, teacher and mentor. Rest in Peace, Matt.

I have fond memories of Mr Pinkman, who was my 8th grade English teacher. I was having trouble in his English classes so he spent extra time with me after classes to help me with English. Not sure he was totally successful with my English but I have always appreciated his help, which I found out many years later he called "extra periods". A good person with a heart of gold. R.I. P. Mr. Pinkman was an incredibly influential teacher in the lives of untold students. Including me. For 50 years, his voice rang in my ears, always correcting grammar and spelling errors in my writing, first in newspapers and later my own English classroom. May the memories of a life well lived be as blessings, and sustain you now and in the days to come. My deepest sympathies.

My parents named me in homage of Matt in 1972. He was my mother’s math teacher and my father’s mentor and boss. I am proud to have known him, I loved him and he will forever remain a legacy in my life. Please accept my condolences.
