Executors
What Is an Executor?
An executor is the personal representative responsible for settling your estate after your death. This includes taking control of your assets, paying debts and taxes, and distributing property to your beneficiaries according to the instructions in your will.
You may appoint anyone to serve as executor, but it is wise to choose someone who is competent, organized, and trustworthy, as the role carries both legal and administrative responsibilities. Your chosen executor should be named clearly in your will.
It is also important to note that an appointed executor has the right to decline the role. For this reason, many people name an alternate, or backup, executor to ensure matters can proceed smoothly if the primary choice is unable or unwilling to serve.
